Hal lived life to the fullest.  Born in Los Angeles his parents taught him the important lesson of serving his community, and began training him in the restaurant business at the ripe age of 7 at the famous "Stern's Bar-b-Que".

After high school he served in the US navy for 6 years, and then went on to UCLA majoring in business.   Upon the death of his father, he left his schooling to take over the family's restaurant business.  He then expanded it to another restaurant and lodging called "Stern's on the Hill" in Playa Del Rey, along with a big Catering business and Real Estate development business. After a few years he became President of the Bay Area Restaurant Association.

In California he had the pleasure of serving as President of the local Lions Club, Chairman of the Board of the YMCA, District Chairman of the Boy Scouts, President and founding Board Member of the Calabasas Rotary Club, Captain of the Santa Monica Mounted Police, and Master of the Hunt of the West Hills Hunt Club (for which he always, always lead the pack safely home). In addition he also showed and jumped horses around the world.

Successful in all his businesses, he decided to take on some new challenges and moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where he immediately became active as a Real Estate Broker, with his own companies, and managed them for 25 years.

Hal also served as a Counselor for the Service Core of Retired Executives, Board Member and President of the Flagstaff Rotary (1996-97), Founding Administrator  of the Flagstaff Free Clinic (which became North Country Community Health Care), Flagstaff Elks Lodge #499, Flagstaff Exchange Club,  President of the Flagstaff Symphony (1995-96), Flagstaff City Commissioner for Open Space for 8 years, member of the Coconino Search & Rescue team,  and member of the Courtesy Patrol at Arizona Snow Bowl for 12 years. Hal's commitment to non-profit service organizations spanned over 50 years.

In addition to his very full life as a business man, Hal was an avid golfer and equestrian, and enjoyed sailing, flying his plane, hiking with his dogs, mountain biking, skiing, and working with his therapy dog, Sadie, at the Flagstaff Medical Center.

Hal truly lived an active and fulfilling life with his businesses, outdoor sports and service clubs.

Hal leaves behind his sister, Margie, and the loves of his life, Jannelle, Sadie and Angel.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 9.2019, 4 PM at the Flagstaff Elks Lodge, 2101 N. San Francisco.
