Gerri Jordan Wainwright passed away peacefully Thursday April 24, 2014, in her home, surrounded by family in Flagstaff, Ariz. Gigi was born September 15th, 1929 in Haarlem, Holland. Her early childhood was spent in Sumatra, N.E.I.. During WWII with the Japanese invasion impending, the family left for the United States. Her father was then assigned to Brazil by the Dutch Government in Exile. There she and her two sisters attended the school, Ecole Americana. Following the war they emigrated to the United States. Gerri graduated from Bellows HS in Mamaroneck, New York. While attending college she visited family in Holland. On that voyage she met her future husband Peter Stuyvesant Wainwright. They were married the following year, 1951, in New York City, and lived successively in Pittsburgh, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Paradise Valley. Upon Peter's retirement in 1987 they moved to Flagstaff.
Crowned Mrs. New Mexico, she was involved in the Junior League, Crisis Nursery, Desert Debutants, Flagstaff Symphony Guild and the Republican Party. At Phoenix Country Day School she was a favorite room parent and ski trip chaperone. Gigi was an avid sports woman into her eighties. As a skier she was featured on the cover of New Mexico Magazine; she also enjoyed scuba diving, tennis and golf.
Gigi is survived by Peter, husband of 63 years, their four children; Peter Jr., Dan, Louise and Jonathan, their spouses; Gayle, Debbie, Mark, Melinda, six grandsons, Four great grandchildren and her sister Trudy Johnson. Her graciousness, elegant style and love, influenced and touched many.
Peter and their family are grateful to her physicians, the staff of Nurses Network, Hospice Compassus and the expressions of love by so many friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Memorial Weekend.
