November 1, 1928 – January 9, 2016
Jean Marie Mestas, 87, passed away peacefully January 9, 2016 attended by her loving companion of 60 years, Pete Mestas, at their home on the Anvil Rock Ranch, 30 miles southwest of Seligman, Arizona.
She was the only child of Roy Burke Heaton and Christine Easton Heaton.Jean was born November 1, 1928 in Prescott, Arizona.Her father worked for Santa Fe Railroad and was stationed at Ash Fork at the time, soon the family transferred to Phoenix and then to Winslow when Jean was five years old.
Jean graduated from Winslow High School in 1946 and attended college in Flagstaff.Always a Bulldog, she and her husband Pete returned for class reunions which she greatly enjoyed.
When her children were older she returned to Northern Arizona University and received her bachelor's degree.She taught school in Seligman for 20 years and acquired a master's degree plus 12 additional graduate hours during her career.
Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed the solitude of ranch life in her later years where she could enjoy her books.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband Pete Mestas, Seligman, Arizona, a son George Haley, Washington, Utah, two daughters Chris Tonemah, Henderson, Nevada and Mary Sandoval, Flagstaff, Arizona, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grand children.
Jean requested cremation with no services.The family will honor her wishes.
