Obituary

Lewis McCormick, 49, died on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 in Flagstaff.He was born on February 26, 1961 in Lafayette, Indiana to Mary and Richard McCormick.He grew up in Tempe, AZ and went to high school at Marcos de Niza, graduating in 1979.

Lew attended college at Northern Arizona University with a dual major in Environmental Science and Computer Science, graduating in 1983.He married his wife Julie in 1983 and shortly afterwards moved to southern California where he worked for several years as a software engineer for Hughes Aircraft.In 1989, they returned to Flagstaff where Lew went back to school at NAU, earning his Masters in Business Administration in 1991.

Over the years Lew worked in many different areas.He spent several years in Tsaile, AZ where he taught math and computer courses at Navajo Community College (now Dine College).He also owned and operated his own optical lab where he and his business partner ground glass lenses for various optical companies in Flagstaff and around Arizona.He worked as a computer analyst at Coconino Community College and with the financial systems at Northern Arizona University.

Lew was a Boy Scout and in his youth, he worked several summers at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.This is where he met his wife, Julie.Throughout his life, Lew enjoyed rock climbing, hiking, camping, hunting, and working on do-it-yourself projects around the house.He enjoyed politics and had a passion for economics.He loved to travel visiting Mexico, Guatemala and Europe where he visited Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Latvia.He was an active supporter of the Latvian survivors of the Holocaust, traveling multiple times to Latvia, delivering medical supplies and meeting directly with the survivors.He was a member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church and regularly attended and enjoyed the Thursday morning Men's Breakfast group.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Julie, son, Richard, daughter Rachel, parents Mary and Richard McCormick, sister Deanna King, brother, Matthew McCormick, two nephews, and four nieces.

A memorial service will be held Monday, February 14th at 6:30 pm.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 15th at 10:00 am.All services will be held at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church of Flagstaff, 319 S. San Francisco St.Burial will follow services at Citizens Cemetery, 1300 S San Francisco St.
