In the early morning hours of August 5th, Nora Sedillo, beloved mother, grandmother, great -grandmother, proud member of her church and a pillar in the community of Flagstaff passed from this life to be with her Lord.
Nora was born in 1938 to Gregorio “Curly” and Consuelo “Concha” Martinez in their home here in Flagstaff. She was the second child in the family, after her loving sister Mary (Padilla). Raised in an era where her mother would make dozens of fresh home made tortillas and barter them along with decorative flour sacks and crocheted doilies with neighbors for hand-made dresses for her daughters.
As a member of the community she and her husband James “Jimmy” Sedillo owned Sedillo Cleaners for well over thirty years. For decades they insisted on dry cleaning the uniforms of first responders at no charge, and would often (without notice) add company funds (quarters) to washing machines in use by citizens who appeared to be struggling. That eagerness to give back continued well-past the sale of their business at retirement. Nora was recognized as Flagstaff Volunteer Citizen of the Year in 2014 for her diverse and unyielding calling to do for others. In 2018 Nora focused her volunteerism to work tirelessly with her daughter Paula’s non-profit Tennis for Tots, helping Paula distribute over 3000 pairs of shoes, socks, backpacks and school supplies every end of summer (for the new school year), winter and spring to children in need in Central and Northern Arizona.
Nora’s joyful nature at every turn drew family and friends close. Nora was aunt to nearly 40 nieces and nephews - all of whom received a hand-written birthday card every year! Nora is survived by her four children, Loretta (Tony) Padilla of Houston, TX, Maria (Saul) Marquez of El Paso, TX, Joaquin (Craig) Sedillo of Los Angeles and Cape Cod, MA, Paula (Willie) Wise, of Paulden, AZ; her eleven grandchildren, Shannon (Andy), Bryan (Carol), Alejandra (Omar), Laura (Rodrigo), Josh, Alex, Kenny (Danni), Alaina, Kevin, BonnieRose and Bryce; and eight great-grandchildren Liam, Oliver, Logan, Nathan, Alexa, Juliana, Emery and Simon.
Nora was a shining example of love, kindness, selfless giving and faith beyond measure. Though she is now in a better place… she succeeded in making this life a better place for others.
