It is with great sadness that the family of Patrick William Whalen, 78, announce his passing on December 30, 2019, in Flagstaff, Arizona.Patrick was born the fourth of eleven children (Michael Whalen, Peg Shipley, Anne Neal, Bill Whalen, Jane Lowry, Mary Jo Macomber, Tom Whalen, Datie Wynne, and Theresa Stout). He met and married Gloria Jean Lutes in Bloomington, IL on December 26, 1963. They raised four children, Timothy Whalen, Jacquelyn (Whalen) de Laveaga, Michael Whalen, and William Whalen. They moved to Arizona in 1976.

Patrick is survived by his children and their spouses, and by his grandchildren Jacob Whalen, Luke Whalen, Krystina Whalen, and Mollimykenna Whalen; Sarah (de Laveaga) Ellefson, Timothy de Laveaga, Olivia de Laveaga, Richard Elias de Laveaga, and Jude de Laveaga; Gloria Whalen and Juliana Whalen; and great-granddaughter, Eleanor de Laveaga.

Patrick was born on February 28, 1941 in Bloomington, IL at St. Joseph's Hospital.Upon graduation from Central Catholic High School in Bloomington, IL, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving, he began working in the restaurant industry, and he continued in this career until retirement.

Patrick owned and operated several businesses with his wife, Gloria, during his working career, including the O-W Restaurant (Bloomington, IL), the A&W Restaurant (Parker, AZ), The Willow Creek Inn (Prescott, AZ), Whalen's Cafe (Prescott, AZ), and The Inn (Prescott, AZ).

Patrick was preceded in death by his younger brother, William Whalen, his parents, Bernie and Marie Whalen, and his younger sister, Catherine O. (Whalen) Elsbree.

A rosary and funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, located at 16 West Cherry Avenue in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Friday, January 17, 2020. A viewing will occur before from 9:15-10 a.m. The Committal will follow the funeral mass and it will be held at Calvary Cemetery, 201 W. University Drive in Flagstaff, AZ

Pallbearers will be Michael B. Whalen (brother), Thomas Whalen (brother), Timothy Whalen (son), Michael O. Whalen (son), Richard de Laveaga (son-in-law), and Timothy de Laveaga (grandson). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Olivia White Hospice Home in Flagstaff, AZ.
