Obituary

Marion “Mimi” passed away on December 28, 2021.

Mimi was born in Hollywood, California and grew up on an 18-acre prune farm in Gilroy, California. Her father died when she was young, leaving Mimi and her mother, Mathilde (Mommike), to tend the newly purchased farm for about a decade and a half by themselves. Later, Mimi and Mommike moved to a much smaller 2-acre property in San Martin, which they planted with an apricot orchard.

Mimi completed her bachelor's degree in Food Service Management at San Jose State University and her master's degree in Dietetics at the University of Milwaukee. She had a successful career as a dietitian for Stanford University Food Services where she met her husband, John Pat. When Mimi and John Pat were first married, they lived in Palo Alto. They moved to Gilroy in 1976, where they had their daughter, Jessica, three years later. Then in 1986, the family moved to Los Gatos. In 1995 Mimi, John Pat, and Jessica left California and moved to their dream home in Flagstaff, Arizona where Mimi turned her attention to gardening and quilt making.

Mimi was always sewing, cooking, or working in the garden. While participating in the Gilroy 4H when she was young, Mimi won ribbons at the County Fair for her sewing projects. She was always making her own clothes, especially for special occasions. We will all miss being recipients of so many of her creative endeavors, including her handmade quilts and delicious meals.

Mimi loved to garden. She did things with care and excellence after studying how to do it correctly. Mimi achieved the formal status of Master Gardener while living in Flagstaff. She had always worked with plants, as her mother did, whose parents had been florists and flower growers. Mimi made an art of it.

Mimi leaves her husband John Pat, her daughter Jessica, son-in-law David, and grandson Wyatt, as well as many friends and family members. We will miss being the recipients of her handmade gifts and occasional twinkle-eyed teasing, the unmistakable sound of her laughter, and beautiful smile.
